Falls

Falls are common at Silver Lake. Falls take various forms.

There is the “hitting the ground or a solid object” fall. These are most often treated by the fire department paramedic.

Frequently, the “fall” is the inability to get off the ground or the apartment floor. Gardeners occasionally need help getting up from planting and maintaining flowers and shrubs. Residents often slip out of bed or off a chair. A neighbor’s helping hand usually suffices.

Residents are issued wearable devices that can call for help while on campus. Bathrooms have an emergency call pullstring. Residents are encouraged to keep a whistle on their key rings if not wearing their calling device. Whistles are louder and shriller than a voice, carry farther, and require less physical effort.

Silver Lake staff are always looking for “trip hazards” in and around the campus. Anything on the ground protruding more than 1/4 inch is quickly removed.
